Gossip Friday: Very Much All Right

clark gable carole lombard

From March 1941:

Wouldn’t you think that, after coming 3,000 miles to see Clark Gable (and a few others), and, after rearranging a whole week so as to be able to get out to MGM, when he would be working on a picture–wouldn’t you imagine that we’d have something very serious and important to talk about?

Something like the Rhett Butler portrayal which climaxed his career. Or like the shoulder which gave him so much trouble a few months ago. Or like his home life. Or Carole Lombard.

Well, we did touch on those subjects, of course, but lightly. No need to say much about Rhett Butler, since Gable put the most serious months of his life on that role and he knows, as well as any one–and without conceit–that he outdid even himself, for “Gone with the Wind.” The shoulder of course, is better. The home life is just what Gable would call “perfect.” There’s understanding consideration and a lot of laughs at the Lombard-Gable house. And Carole–well, Gable doesn’t have to talk about her for long for you to realize that she must be very much all right, too.

There is just so much adoration in the looks he always gave Carole. It’s heartwarming yet so sad at the same time- it just doesn’t seem fair that people only get snapshots of happiness in this world. It just shouldn’t be like that…
