Gossip Friday: Spotting the Widower
Some gossip about Clark from the August after Carole Lombard’s death…
From August 1942:
Our most pleasant experience in many weeks: spotting Clark Gable dining out for the first time since his loss, accompanied by friends at the Vine Street Brown Derby. Later we saw him shaking hands with young soldiers who clustered around him. Gable looks more fit than he has in a long time, lean and tanned from riding to and from work on his motorcycle.
Remember that old Ford that Carole Lombard dolled with fancy paint and gave to Clark Gable for a Valentine years ago? It was so much a part of their happy love story that Clark couldn’t bear to have around any longer. Marc Lawrence bought it.

The picture at the top where you commented that”spotting Clark Gable dining out for the first time after his loss, accompanied with friends at the Vine Street Derby” is wrong. This picture was taken of him leaving Nevada with his two friends Eddie mannix on the left and Al Menasco.
I am a great fan of Clark’s and I want to thank you for keeping his memory alive.

I know, I just used that picture because it was from right after Carole’s death. There aren’t any candid shots of him really between January 1942 and when he joined the Army in August, only ones on the set.
Thank you so much for your support!
