Gossip Friday: Boo!

In the spirit of Halloween…

Hollywood is full of stories of ghosts of classic stars. Ciro’s , a popular 1940’s nightclub frequented by the likes of Marlene Dietrich, Lana Turner, Joan Crawford, Norma Shearer, Bing Crosby and yes–Clark and Carole,  is now The Comedy Store in Los Angeles and is said to be a hotspot for paranormal activity.  Marilyn Monroe is said to haunt her former suite in the Roosevelt Hotel. The Pickfair Mansion, former home of Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford, is said to be haunted by Mary. John Barrymore’s old mansion is said to be haunted by him. Famously, if you visit the grave of Rudolph Valentino’s dog Kabar in the Los Angeles Pet cemetary, it is said you can hear a dog panting and he’ll even lick you if he likes you. MGM Studios is said to have several hanuted buildings.

What about Clark? Where would he haunt? If I was to guess, I would say the ghost of Clark would certainly not want to be socializing at Ciro’s  or jumping out at people at MGM. Nor do I think he would roam the halls of his mausoleum at Forest Lawn, if he had the choice (although it is said that his mausoleum is haunted, with cold spots felt, and employees hearing footsteps, laughter and champagne glasses clinking–would be quite a party with Clark and his neighbors–Jean Harlow, Norma Shearer….)   I would say odds are Clark would haunt the Encino Ranch. Maybe him and Carole have some fun with the current residents? I’m not in the position to know.

The TV series Dead Famous dedicated an episode to finding the ghosts of Clark & Carole a few years ago. I saw it when it aired and I must say they are a bit far-fetched in choosing their locations–Oatman, Arizona, one of Clark’s old hunting lodges, a saloon near Las Vegas where Clark waited to hear word from Carole’s plane crash. They were probably denied access to the ranch and other more likely places. Plus it has been confirmed that the Gables never did stay in Oatman for their honeymoon so the whole “honeymoon suite” thing is pure fiction. I have an open mind—but if they did indeed find any ghosts, I don’t think they were Clark & Carole’s.

I’m doing some catching up today (it’s raining!) so just read this. I thought I read somewhere that the couple who own (or did own) the Ranch said they likely could have been “visited” by one or both. These people worked hard to fix the Ranch up as it was in 1940s. And rumor has it that it served as a recovery center for cancer victims. All or none could be possible, I suppose, Carolyn? You are so good at this stuff!
