Gossip Friday: Missing a Friend
From December 1955 (Louella Parsons):
Mrs. Clark Gable has become so much the wife of The King that she is seeing few of the old friends who were so good to her in the dark days when life was pretty desperate for her.
It’s understandable that a married woman must accept her husband’s friends and make his pals hers, but there is one case where I think Kay is remiss–that of a certain actress who was very good to her during the days when other of her friends shied away from the then Mrs. Spreckels for fear of publicity. Of course, I may be wrong and there may be some reason of which I do not know.
But this whole attitude is so unlike Kay, who up until now has always been fun-loving, gay, generous and kind, that I’m wondering what’s back of it.

Doesn’t surprise me. I’m going to guess the actress is Dorothy Lamour. Her and Kay were very tight during “the Spreckels years,” yet I have never heard anything about her and Kay after Kay married Clark.
Here’s Dorothy and Kay at Kay’s baby shower for daughter Joan in 1950. Dorothy was Joan’s godmother.

I’m going to be a bit catty. Well a lot catty actually- no disrespect meant to Kay but… in almost every picture of her and Clark after they married she holds on to him as if something or someone is going come between them and wipe her out or steal Clark. After so many pic like that it looks a bit unbecoming. Perhaps she was just a bit possessive and a bit worried and insecure.

I’ve noticed that too!
Rachel Clark
I’ve often noticed that. I think it’s because of Carol Lumbard. It had to be hard for her knowing that even though he was her husband she wasn’t his soulmate, in Clark’s mind anyway. He died first but she still buried him beside Carol. She must of been full of insecurities, I would have been.
