    Happy Birthday, Clark Gable

William Clark Gable was born 119 years ago today, February 1, 1901. He was born at 5:30am to Adeline “Addie” Hershelman Gable and William Gable in their second floor apartment in Cadiz, Ohio. To celebrate this year, I’m doing fan requests on our Instagram and Facebook pages, followed by a complete bio on Clark that will come out in increments over several days. Here on the website, there are four new articles: First off, we have a bit of a dud from Clark’s early career, What the Future Holds for Clark Gable, written in 1932 by Modern Screen magazine’s in-house astrologer. This article is completely showing its age. Can you…

    In Memory of Carole Lombard

Carole Lombard died 78 years ago today, at age 33. The plane carrying Carole, her mother and MGM publicity man Otto Winkler, among others, slammed into Mount Potosi near Las Vegas on a cold snowy night, January 16, 1942. All died instantly. The death of Carole forever changed Clark Gable and despite whatever happiness he found later, he undoubtedly never fully recovered from it. As the news spread across the nation, the newspapers apparently called up everyone in fandom to give a comment on the tragedy: All Hollywood Mourns Popular Actress’ Death High and Low of Film Colony Shocked by Air Disaster Killing Warmhearted Actress Sorrow hushed the sound stages…

    Goodbye, Mr. Gable

Clark Gable died fifty-nine years ago today, on November 16, 1960. He was fifty-nine years old. He has now been gone for as long as he lived, which is rather startling to realize. Married to Kay with a baby on the way and proud of his recent performance in The Misfits, Clark was very content and not ready to go. But such is life. From Life magazine in January 1961: Thirty years ago, Clark Gable slapped Norma Shearer’s aristocratic face in A Free Soul and launched his own personal era of heroes who take no nonsense from women. In his heyday, he was lusty, challenging, unsophisticated. He grew more stolid…

Clark Gable and Carole Lombard’s 80th Anniversary

Clark Gable and Carole Lombard were married 80 years ago today, on March 29, 1939. They were together about three years before they were married and unfortunately never made it to their third wedding anniversary before Carole’s untimely death, but Carole’s impact on Clark’s life can not be overestimated. In 1957, a reporter asked Clark why he doesn’t talk about Carole in interviews. “You may not like my next question,” I said. “Is it true that you don’t like to talk about Carole Lombard because it reminds you of her tragic end and distresses you?” “That isn’t true,” [Clark] said. “My feelings are under better control than that. I have…

    We’re 9!

This website is 9 years old today! Wow that is hard to believe. When I started I was hand-coding with an old laptop and a paperback copy of “Website Building for Dummies.” 2019 will be a big deal as it is the 10th anniversary of this website, not to mention the 80th anniversary of Gone with the Wind! Starting this week and running until the week of July 1, 2019, we will be featuring a “Movie of the Week”–photos, trivia, etc about one movie a week. Yes, I do realize that there are more films than weeks, so some of the lesser roles will be combined. They will not be…

Happy Anniversary, Clark Gable and Carole Lombard

Clark Gable and Carole Lombard were married 79 years ago today, on March 29, 1939, eloping to Kingman, Arizona on the spur of the moment. You can read Clark’s description of their wedding day here. Because they managed to slink away and marry with no fanfare, they dutifully obliged to an early morning press conference on the front lawn of Carole’s home on St. Cloud Rd.  There is newsreel footage of this press conference, with Clark and Carole in their wedding attire, beaming and laughing and constantly touching each other. But it is silent. There are dozens and dozens of pictures of them; every time I think I’ve seen every…

    Happy Birthday, Mr. Gable

Today is Clark Gable’s 117th birthday! To celebrate, I thought I’d comb through my massive collection and pick out my favorite 117 pictures of him. Not an easy feat, as I lost count at 20,000 photos a long time ago and there are so many I haven’t scanned or categorized yet. But here they are. These are in no particular order; they are not a countdown of my favorite pictures and they are not in chronological order either (thought that would be boring). They are just 117 of my favorites and the reason I love them could be because they are beautiful, they are weird, they are funny…whatever reason. Here…
