This is my favorite behind-the-scene picture because it tells a story all its own of two fine actors and the ease and playful affection between them. There they sit, very closely, face to face, the exquisitely feminine Vivien between the outspread and well-muscled legs of the undeniably masculine Gable. Her right arm rests on his thigh and he is picking something off her skirt, near her lap. It’s an intriquing pose. Though they are off camera, there is communicated the intimacy of a husband with his wife–utterly familiar. Once senses the warmth and generosity each has lent to the other. Clark is as truly and palpably Rhett Butler in the flesh as Vivien is truly and palpably Scarlett Butler because they have made it this way together.
