{New Article} 1954: Gable and His Girls
This 1954 article was written by everybody in Hollywood’s favorite “frenemy,” the infamous Louella Parsons. Most of the articles of this period, between Clark’s ill-fated marriage to Sylvia Ashley and his subsequent union with Kay Williams, focus on all of Clark’s girlfriends and who will be the next Mrs. Gable. The King laughed when I persisted in asking about beautiful blonde Grace Kelly (the new Hollywood sensation) with whom Clark was supposed to have been very much in love with they were making ‘Mogambo,’ and of Suzanne Dadolle, the French charmer of the odd name, with whom his name was later linked all over Europe. Grace is supposed to have…

1954: Gable and His Girls
By Louella Parsons Modern Screen, May 1954 Hollywood’s most famous reporter felt like a prying D.A. but when Louella finished with Clark, she had a full confession There never will be another Mrs. Clark Gable! “I’ll never marry again,” Clark told me, quietly. And then he smiled, “But I shall always enjoy the company of lovely ladies.” As disheartening as this news will be to the femmes who consider The King the most attractive man on the screen and the dozens of beauties all over the world who would love to become Mrs. Gable Number Five, the statement was made by Mr. G. himself with almost cheerful finality on the…

{New Article} 1946: Are You The Girl For Clark Gable?
This article is run-of-the-mill for the period. After Carole Lombard died and Clark was home from the war, every article was about who would be the next Mrs. Gable and what kind of women he likes. Hey but this one included a quiz! (and yes, it’s quite sexist) Take this test to see if you’re the girl for Gable. Are you mature in your manner? Do you have a quick mind? Do you possess a quality or knowledge which would make you interesting to Clark? Are you honest, frank, direct? Do you have a sense of humor? Are you good at gay small talk? Can you intelligently discuss engines, hunting,…

His tastes in women are strongly contradictory. Until he finds…

Gossip Friday: Happy New Year
From January 1, 1957: Hollywood Throws $125,000 Party The film colony’s upper crust welcomed the new year with a $125,000 party in Texas style at Mike Romanoff’s restaurant. Texas oilman David (Tex) Feldman picked up the tab and was so exclusive about his guest list that he refused to let Clark Gable and Gable’s wife, the former Kay Spreckels, bring along two friends… A seven course dinner along with seven kinds of wine was served. The entertainment bill, which featured singer Edith Piaf, cost Feldman $7,500. The costume motif was styled in the gay 90s fashion after the musical “My Fair Lady.” The main party room was turned into a…

Remembering Clark Gable, 60 Years Later
Clark Gable died sixty years ago today, on November 16, 1960. He was only 59 years old. After a long and tedious shooting schedule for The Misfits, Clark was ready for a rest. He was set on not doing another movie until after his child was born, in March. On November 6, 1960, he spent what would be his final day at his beloved ranch. He toiled away the day working with his hunting dog, playing with the children, and relaxing. He told Kay he felt tired and went to bed early. He tossed and turned all night. At about 8:00am, Kay awakened to see Clark standing in the doorway, pale and…

Gossip Friday: Well, He Hasn’t Asked
From December 1944: Clark Gable, though he still takes Kay Williams to parties, is having lots of dates for himself with different gals these evenings. But he’s seen mostly with Sally Wright, an attractive non-professional, who almost went to the altar with Bob Cobb, owner of the Brown Derby Restaurants, a few months ago. Kay Williams now announces she’s not going to marry Clark Gable because he hasn’t asked her, which is as good a reason as any. At a party the other day, Kay, whose divorce from the South American Macoco is final, announced a fortuneteller had told her she’d marry twice. “Oh, then you on’t be marrying Mr.…

Gossip Friday: What a Contrast
From June 1944: At an Army and Navy dinner dance recently we sat kitty-corner from Captain Clark Gable who had pretty Kay Williams as his girl friend. We thought the two a handsome pair but couldn’t help comparing the quiet, almost demure Kay to the vivid, magnetic Carole. What a contrast.
