Gossip Friday: Nothing is Sacred

From January 1950:

Sylvia Ashley, Gable’s missus, avers that she went to see a Carole Lombard movie, Nothing Sacred, a month before her marriage to Clark. And that did it. She’s now doing over the Gable ranch house–with plans for entertaining on a more formal scale. She’s ordered expansion of the living room to include a grand piano.

I think this shows that Lady Ashley was thoroughly intimidated by the “ghost” of Carole Lombard. She decided to rid the house of any traces of Lombard’s influence. Gable had kept her bedroom just as she left it. Down to the spilled face powder on her vanity. Lady Ashley waited till Gable left town for work, she argued with the housekeeper and got the key to Carole’s room and completely changed it. The following Monday Gable filed for divorce.
