Gossip Friday: Such is Fame

From June 1933:

Clark Gable may be a big shot in the world of the silver screen but he looks like a dollar a day man in Jackson Hole.

When Fred Deyo, local game warden was selling licenses at Moran the other day, he was approached by a man who said he wanted a license to hunt bear.

The warden, immediately suspicious that a non-resident was about to tackle him for a resident license, looked him over and inquired, “Are you one of these reforestation army guys?”

Accosted thus, the famous star turned to a companion and said, “I don’t think so, are we Doc?” He then informed the warden that his name was Clark Gable and that he lived in California.

This bit of confidence relaxed the officer’s vigilance and the conversation turned to game and fish, winding up when Mr. Gable decided to buy a fishing license and postpone the bar hunt until next fall.

As the film star walked away, a native approached the warden and said “That guy looks like Clark Gable.” The office consulted his record and and said, “That’s the name he gave me all right, and it seems like I’ve seen him somewhere before, but who the hell is Clark Gable?”
