Gossip Friday: No Pearls or Mink Allowed
From 1955:
It’s so much hooey, that printed report that his doctors tabooed cocktails for Clark Gable. The King’s health is churning and so is his interest in Kay Williams Spreckels and not Marilyn Monroe as 20th Century Fox subtly hints! When Clark went duck hunting recently, it was Kay whom he asked to hostess a party for him. She made arrangements with Chasen’s where they cooked and served the wild birds in their private dining room. Clark loves gags so Kay dressed up a hysterical-looking dummy and placed it at the head of the table. The lady guests were instructed to wear sweaters and tweeds and–“no pearls or mink allowed.”

A woman very similar to Carole Lombard. I think he really loved her and she made him very happy. She wouldn’t even redecorate his home when she moved in, saying, “Why? Carole had great taste.”

The Kay Williams marriage was a good one for both of them. She got the man, finally. He came with great status and star power. CG was a classy guy.
He was getting up in years the idea of having a ready-made family with Kay was a good. He knew her from years before, she had her own settlement from the divorce, the kids came with trust funds…it was as good a financial deal as he could get.
I love Mr. Gable but I remember reading he had 5 wives and never bought an engagement ring! Was he tight with a buck?
