Gossip Friday: At His Peak
From October 1960:
Travelers back from Nevada, where they watched “The Misfits” shooting, say the big news is the way Clark Gable looks–fit and handsome, and at his absolute peak as a performer.

And, sadly, dead in less than a month. I don’t know about their assessment–I have always thought he looks sickly in The Misfits.

Yeah I agree. I remember reading how he cut back in cigarettes during the misfits but supplemented the habit with cigars. “Eleven Cuban cigars a day, which he inhaled.” Holy mackerel! I used to smoke a help of a lot of both cigars and cigarettes and inhaling ANY cigar was not pleasant. It was plain old painful. Not a good replacement for cigarettes. Poor man.

Biographers suggest he used powerful drugs as he crash-dieted for The Misfits. Then Marilyn Monroe’s behavior nearly drove Gable nuts. She was usually late. She had to go to detox, shutting down production for weeks. It was 100 degrees in the desert. Gable did too many of his own stunts, leaving his hands and side raw and bleeding. (That is from his wife after he came home from the shoot.) Gable smoked too much and drank too much. But he arrived at the set on time, knew his lines, knew where to stand, and did not trip over anything. And he was pushing Sixty, still playing the leading man.

Poor Mr. Gable. I am obsessed with all things Gable. The man has been dead nearly as long as he lived and thats almost six decades ago. Altough I label myself Gable’s biggest fan, yhere are a few things thatappear at odds with who the man supposedly was.
– Why did he deny his daughter, when he supposedly wanted kids. Judy Lewis (Gable) strongly resembled both Young and Gable. did he believe her not to be his child.
Can anyone shed light, provid information on this great tragedy to that innocent child, which affected her so greatly. Maybe that’s whyy he didn’t live to see the only child he was willing to claim.
Didn’t wives or friends encourage him to do the right thing. Such horrible behavior to tarnish the beauty of the man.
