Gone with the Wednesday: Photoplay Magazine Makes Their Choice For Rhett

In 1937, when the casting of Gone with the Wind was the #1 topic of debate, Photoplay magazine declared their choice for Rhett Butler loud and clear.   Photoplay Throws Its Hat in the Ring Herewith we enter the Great Casting Battle of “Gone with the Wind,” because to our mind there is but one Rhett–Clark Gable.  So sure we were of our choice that we had Vincentini paint this portrait of Clark as we see him in the role: cool, impertient, utterly charming. We like all the other handsome actors mentioned as Rhett–only we don’t want them as Rhett. We want Gable and we’re going to stick to that…

    Listen up! More New Audio

I’m very excited to be adding quite a few new radio shows over the next few weeks. New today are: Clips from “The Chase and Sanborn Hour”: Listen to Clark and Edgar Bergen with dummy Charlie McCarthy compare hunting stories and compete for a date with Dorothy Lamour. A short clip from December 10, 1939 in which Clark discusses attending the Gone with the Wind premiere at the end of the week in Atlanta. Happy listening!

Of course with exaggerated ears and I wouldn’t call the voice a spot-on imitation, but hey, any exposure Clark can get nowadays is great! Here is the clip: The Simpsons He also appears briefly at the end of the episode as a ghost  and pays Grandpa Simpson for the shoe shine but I couldn’t find a clip of that. Also, if you subscribe to this blog, you probably got a bunch of “Gossip Friday” emails over the weekend. My blog went kind of haywire with the year change and I’m not sure why, but decided to send out a bunch…

    Updates

I’ve been adding things here and there this week. Including: The Lux radio show The Legionnaire and the Lady, costarring Marlene Dietrich. She sings her classic “Falling in Love Again” at the end and Clark also makes some comments. If you haven’t checked out Imperfect Lady yet, you should! Not only is it adorable and the only performance he did with Ginger Rogers, but at the end they make him and Ginger play a quiz game which he loses and has to do a “forfeit”. Also added to the Multimedia section–three radio commercials, for Love on the Run, Parnell and Mutiny on the Bounty. I also added the film pages for Idiot’s…
