Anniversary

We’re Four!

Hard to believe, but this site is four years old today!

I feel like I just wrote last year’s anniversary post. There are now over 150 articles on the site, ver 11,000 pictures in the gallery and weeks and weeks of Gossip Fridays!

I am forever indebted to the fantastic Clark Gable fans that I interact with on a daily basis. Sometimes, out here on the internet, you wonder if anyone is listening. Sometimes while I’m organizing photos, typing a 3,000 word article, compiling and tagging stacks of fan magazines, I wonder if anyone cares. And it is all of you who tell me that yes, yes you do indeed!

So THANK YOU!

A little while ago, I received an email from a 94 year old man (handwritten and then typed for him by his daughter), whose identity I am protecting. It was a lengthy email and one I will cherish. This gentleman grew up in Encino, down the street from Clark Gable. He remembered him vividly and fondly. He told me of Carole Lombard cheerily showing up at their front door one day and giving his startled mother three dozen eggs. “We can’t possibly eat all these! Take them for the children!” she exclaimed (his family had six children). He recalled Carole holding his baby sisters arms and guiding her how to walk. He remembered his father boasting that Clark asked his advice on how he got his rosebushes so full. He spoke of hearing Clark’s motorcycle zip up and down the street, at all hours of the night, after Carole’s death.

“The last time I saw [Clark] was aboout 1948. I didn’t live there anymore but came back on occaison. I hadn’t seen him for years. He shook my hand and called me by name, asked how I was. I asked him what he was doing. He never talked movie talk, always was just a regular fellow. He much enojoyed talking about [my military career] and eagerly wanted to hear where I was stationed. I remember him saying, ‘That movie stuff, nobody will remember it. I’ll retire soon and everyone will forget my name!’ It is my memory of him saying that that propelled me to write you, as it is thanks to people like you that nobody will ever forget his name.”

And that’s our job here, to make sure nobody ever forgets his name.

Congratulations on your fourth birthday from “big sister” blog “Carole & Co.” (we turned six in June). Wonderful anecdote about Clark and Carole, BTW!

A Happy 4th Annivesary!!! I loved reading the letter from this 94 year old gentleman who had the pleasure of knowing Mr. Gable personally, and of his interaction with both Clark and Carole. It brought tears to my eyes. I wholeheartedly agree with his statement “thanks to people like you that nobody will ever forget his name”. You do an excellent job in this endeavor, and do Mr. Gable’s memory proud! It’s hard to believe Clark ever imagined his name ever being forgotten, not with the body of work he left for us, but again, this only goes to shows what a truly humble man he was. No, Mr. Gable, your name is not forgotten, thanks to this fabulous website in your honor. Congratulations of 4 great years, and here’s to many more to come….Pam

Happy anniversary! I have learned so much about Clark Gable through all of your posts so thank you for instilling so much knowledge about his life.
What a beautiful letter to receive! I bet you were thrilled to receive that. And how kind of him to share those memories. Thank you for sharing that, it is always so wonderful to hear about actors being regular people. Clark and Carole seemed to be regular people in their photos together and like they were very happy.
    Congrats again on four years!

I can’t believe it is only 4 years. It seems I have known this site forever. I say in almost every post but you do a wonderful job with this site. If Gable can access internet in Heaven then he would agree.

Of all things in the world I think perhaps Gable valued dignity the most. And this is by far one of the most dignified, tasteful and classy sites on the entire web.

Keep up the good work and most importantly thank you for everything.
